Data champions commissioned following training

The ORPP is duly licensed as a Data Controller and Data Handler by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. The Office held a sensitization programme for ORPP Data Protection Officers from 11th to 15th May 2026. The programme was aimed at developing an organizational Data Inventory to support the identification of data flows and strengthen the implementation of data protection measures.

“Personal data protection is a subject for all of us, both as an organization and as individuals. We must therefore embrace and implement all the necessary measures required under the Data Protection Act, regulations and guidance notes. The development of a data inventory will be a major milestone for the Office,” said Assistant Registrar Agatha Wahome during the opening session as she appreciated members for their participation.

“The Office has made significant strides through the development of a Data Protection Policy, as well as the reappointment of Data Protection Officers and Data Champions to enhance good data governance,” said Josephat Nyongesa, the ORPP Data Protection Officer.

“The ORPP positions itself as a data-compliant institution and we carry a great responsibility in data processing and data handling,” said Joseph Kanja, Chairperson of the Data Protection Committee, as he emphasized the importance of continuous training.

The sensitization programme featured sessions on the legal framework of data protection, obligations of data handlers, data protection impact assessments, data mapping, among other key areas.

The training was done with support by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner and coordinated by the ICT Departmental team, with staff representation drawn from various departments.
