Multi-agency legal reform team commences deliberations

September 4, 2025: The ORPP hosted a Legal Reform Working Group at ORPP HQ to consolidate legal reforms, towards amendment to the Political Parties Act (PPA) and attendant regulations. The Working Group is convened by ORPP with representatives from team of ORPP, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT), Judicial Committee on Elections (JCE) State Department of Justice (DOJ), Attorney General, Kenya National Commission for Human Rights (KNCHR) and the Kenya Law Reform Commission (KLRC).

The team apprised the status of legal reforms with regard to the PPA and drew a roadmap to achieve priority areas of reform ahead of the 2027 polls.

The Working Group held a further working workshop on 23 to 27th September 2025 to deliberate on amendment of the Political Parties Act and development of Regulations on use of technology.

In the drafting of the proposals, the team will also incorporate views received during a series of prior ORPP engagements with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Faith Based Organizations (FBOs), State actors in elections and Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC).

Some of the areas in consideration in the amendments include providing clarity on party nominations, coalitions, sanctions on non-compliant parties and dispute resolution.
