{"id":5536,"date":"2022-02-25T13:37:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T13:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orpp.or.ke\/?p=5536"},"modified":"2023-10-30T13:38:28","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T13:38:28","slug":"orpp-part-in-forum-forming-women-coordinating-committee-on-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orpp.or.ke\/sw\/orpp-part-in-forum-forming-women-coordinating-committee-on-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"ORPP part in forum forming Women Coordinating Committee on elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) was among the lead institutions that witnessed establishment<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">of a Women Coordinating Committee on Elections (WCC) in a forum held on 14th January, 2022 at the Crowne Plaza,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nairobi.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 7\u2013member team has its membership drawn from representation of various public and non-state organizations<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">led by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Some of its tasks deliberated and agreed dur-<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">ing the meeting inter alia are the following:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">a) To collaborate with IEBC to formulate appropriate strategies and targeted programmes to enhance monitoring<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; and evaluation of participation of women throughout the electoral cycle while pooling resources;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">b) To support in development and distribution of women targeted voter information and communication materials;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">c) To collaborate with IEBC in conducting voter education for members of their representative groups;<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Encourage member organizations to apply for accreditation as election observers and voter education provider for<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">all activities across the electoral cycle.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu in her remarks made by the Senior Administrator, Jane Njeri who represent-<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">ed her in the forum, pointed out the disproportionate participation of women in politics over the world visa-vis the<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">world\u2019s women population. \u201cA global study that was carried out in 2019 indicated participation of women in national<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">level Parliaments was only 24% which accounted for 8% of national leaders\u201d, cited a recent report. Such she noted,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">only arguments the fact that there are unique challenges that women grapple with in their effort to participate espe-<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">cially in politics.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">She noted of the deliberate efforts ORPP had put in place in creating positive and safe space for women to participate<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">in politics. For instance, in order for a political party to be registered, it must meet the conditions spelt out in section 7<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">of the Political Parties Act, 2011 which among others, requires that Special Interest Groups are incorporated in their<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">respective governing organs and membership register, failure to which there are sanctions including a provisionally<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">registered party not to attain full registration\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Registrar emphasized continual inspections that Office undertakes to ensure that political parties\u2019 have structures<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">to enable women actively engage in the internal affairs of political parties including in governing organs. In addition,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">she informed of ORPP\u2019s robust capacity building forums run for women aspirants. \u201cThese fora aim at sensitizing the<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">women about the constitution and other electoral laws in order to enhance their readiness to participate in politics and<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">also scale up their personal development and leadership skills so that they can successfully engage in the political<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">arena and actualize their political ambitions\u201d, the Registrar noted. Adding that women should hold one another hands<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">to benefit in efforts of various players like on the Coordination Committee that will bolster women potential and capa-<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">bilities to not only vie successfully for political positions but also influence the formulation of policies that will positively<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">impact the lives of Kenyans.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notable speakers who also spoke on varied facets on the subject of the forum\u2019s deliberations were among others:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">IEBC\u2019s Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, Commissioner Francis Wanderi and Joyce Ekuam Director, Voter Educa-<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">tion, Partnerships and Communication.
