Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) is a state office established under Article 260 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and the Political Parties Act, 2011. The mandate of the office, among others is to register, regulate the formation and funding of political parties in accordance with the Constitution and rule of law.

The Act is the primary legal reference for management of political parties in accordance with Articles 91 and 92 of the Constitution, which envisages well-governed political parties that respect internal democracy and their constitutional status in the Kenyan political system.

The Political Parties Act,2011 provides that ORPP should be headed by Registrar of Political Parties deputized by three (3) Assistant Registrars. Currently, the Office is headed by the Registrar and deputized by two(2) Assistant Registrars.

In order to effectively carry out its mandate and functions, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties is organized into three (3) Directorates and four (4) Independent units. Each directorate is headed by an Assistant Registrar. Under the Directorates are three Departments headed by the Directors. The HR & Administration Department and four independent units headed by the Assistant Director will report directly to the Registrar of Political parties

The three directorates are

(i) Registration and Field Services Coordination;

(ii) Regulation and Compliance;

(iii) Political Parties Fund, Partnerships & Strategy

The independent units are

  • Internal Audit Unit;
  • Supply Chain Management Unit;
  • Corporate Communication Unit
  • Legal Services Unit

The ORPP has an organizational structure headed by the Registrar of Political Parties and deputized by three (3) Assistant Registrars. There are four (4) directorates namely; Registration and Regulation; Financial Management; Planning, Research and ICT; and Human Resource Management and Administration.

Our History

The journey of the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to its being a body corporate is an eventful one, spanning over five decades. It is a history dating back to pre-independence. It is characterised by policy shift, institutional reports, and legal regime developments, definitive of today’s structured framework for managing political parties.
