In the real world, investing is not about perfectly predicting the next big stock or waiting for a lucky financial windfall. It is about steadily building a portfolio that can support your day-to-day financial obligations and remain stable even during difficult periods. It also means ensuring that growth in one area can help cushion losses in another by spreading your investments across different assets. One key way to achieve this is by balancing liquid and illiquid investments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Liquid investments are assets that are already in cash form or can easily be converted into cash. These include savings accounts, cash investment accounts, publicly traded stocks, mutual funds, money market funds, treasury bills, and tradable bonds. In Kenya, liquid investment options are widely available through commercial banks, microfinance banks, mobile service providers, investment banks, stockbrokers, and SACCOs. Mobile providers have made it even easier by introducing money market services such as Ziidi<\/em> and Mali<\/em>, allowing individuals to fully manage investments directly from their mobile phones.<\/p>\n

Liquidity offers flexibility, easy access to funds, and financial security during emergencies. The risks associated with liquid investments are usually lower. However, investors must be mindful of their relatively lower returns, exposure to market fluctuations, and the gradual loss of purchasing power due to inflation. In addition, the ease of conversion and access can sometimes lead to reduced spending discipline.<\/p>\n

Liquid investments, on the other hand, are assets that are harder to convert into cash. They often take longer to sell, may require offering discounts to attract buyers, and typically have fewer potential purchasers. Their payoff period is also longer, and they generally carry higher risk. These investments, on the other hand, often provide higher returns, greater stability, and less day-to-day market volatility. Because they cannot easily be sold, they also protect investors from emotional and impulsive decisions, which is why they often offer a premium return. Examples include land, real estate, private equity, and hedge funds.<\/p>\n

When making investment decisions, it is important to consider both liquid and illiquid assets. Diversifying across these major categories helps ensure that the investment portfolio supports growth, stability, and emergency needs. It is equally important to diversify across different sectors, industries, company sizes, and geographical regions. This allows investments to perform differently at different times, helping protect the overall wealth when some assets underperform.<\/p>\n

Another important factor is the investment mix<\/strong>. A well-balanced portfolio includes both liquid and illiquid investments. The phrase \u201ccash is king\u201d is often used because cash provides the ability to handle immediate expenses, respond to emergencies, and take advantage of opportunities. Maintaining a healthy portion of liquid investments offers flexibility and protection from financial shocks. However, while cash may be king, patience is the key to premium returns<\/strong>. Illiquid investments are often the avenues where long-term wealth is built. Striking the right balance between the two is the real secret to sustainable investing. Keep enough liquidity to manage the present, so that you can give your illiquid investments the time they need to grow your future wealth. In essence, you pay for tomorrow\u2019s rewards with the flexibility you are willing to give up today. One provides safety while the other provides scale.<\/p>\n
